Why Personal Training?

why you need a personal trainer

“Do I really need a trainer? Can’t I just use this free app or video?”

If you’ve ever asked yourself this question, you’re not alone. Many people wonder whether personal training will be worth it.

While working out with videos and fitness apps can be great supplements to your gym regimen, they are NOT a substitute for professional training.  Here’s why.

APPS DON’T KNOW YOUR BODY

An app doesn’t know your body or your history of injuries.

If you experience persistent low-back pain, and you attempt to follow a “30 day ab challenge” with no modifications or concurrent exercise for your opposing muscles, you’re setting yourself up for disaster.

That’s because fitness is NOT one-size-fits-all. Many exercises may be inappropriate, inefficient, or unsafe for your unique body.

If you’re using a fitness app alone, you might not know you’re doing harm, until one day you throw your back out, or develop sudden knee pain, or any host of unpleasant surprises.

Personal trainers, on the other hand, assess your flexibility, strength, range of motion, posture, balance, and form in every exercise. It allows them to predict any injuries you might be headed for, and prevent them BEFORE they start.

APPS WON’T KEEP YOUR PROGRESS FROM PLATEAUING

If you’ve been using the same app with the same routines for over 6 weeks, you’re not getting the full benefit of all your hard work.

Conversely, if you’re switching up your routine randomly– a long run here, a one-rep-max lifting session there– you’re likewise wasting your effort.

Both patterns can lead to the dreaded “plateau effect,” where you’ve been working out faithfully, but your progress levels off, and you don’t continue to see gains.

Despite what people think, the answer is NOT to try powering through, upping the intensity of your favorite routine, harder and harder, longer and longer, month after month. While that may keep the results coming in the short term, in the long term it’s an inefficient (not to mention exhausting) method of training. It’s also setting yourself up for injury.

Personal trainers know how to carefully, strategically design your fitness plans to cycle through each phase of training, so you’re working out “smarter, not harder,” and those results just keep rolling in!

You’re already doing the work, so why not get the maximum benefit?

APPS EXPERIENCE SIGNIFICANT USAGE FALL-OFF

The sad truth is that most people who start an exercise program, solo, will tire of it and quit within six months.

Boredom, changing life circumstances, and failure to achieve the desired results are commonly cited reasons. Fitness apps do little to address any of these concerns.

Personal trainers, on the other hand, are always teaching you something new. Once they assess that you have “leveled up” in an area, they can add a new twist to keep things fun, fresh, and interesting.

They also adapt to your changing life needs. If you have a personal trainer, you have a partner and teammate in tackling all of life’s fitness challenges.

Inspired to do a 10k this summer? Want to improve your posture before a big event? Dreaming of embarking on a long, difficult hike to see one of the world’s most beautiful places?

Your trainer is there for you. Helping you conquer each new goal, and then moving on to the next.

There’s a reason many athletes work with their trainers for years, even decades! They’ve discovered what exercise science already shows: that having a professional trainer oversee your progress is vastly more effective, motivating, interesting, safe, and easy to stick with than trying to go it alone.
